The State of Zoos in Europe

Source

“The state-of-the-art Regenstein Center for African Apes is unlike any other in the country – maybe the world. It offers 29,000 square feet of living space, indoors and out. Bamboo stands real and simulated. Dozens of trees and 5,000 feet of artificial vines for climbing. Skylights. Termite mounds for chimpanzee “fishing.” A waterfall. A moat. Heated logs. Fresh air. Sunshine. The $26 million center is the most expensive building ever constructed at the zoo. Its primary features are three spacious habitats: the Kovler Gorilla Bamboo Forest, the Strangler Fig Forest (which accommodates either chimpanzees or gorillas) and the Dry Riverbed Valley (which also accommodates chimpanzees or gorillas). Huge glass windows separate the indoors from the outdoors. A deep moat prevents gorillas from scrambling out of their 12,000-square-foot, open-air habitat. Mesh netting secures chimpanzees and gorillas in the other natural habitats, which off a combined 13,600 square feet. Indoors or out, the view is unmatched. A major element of the new building is the Lester E. Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes. The center engages zoo visitors, members and students in science and conservation initiatives through an integrated program of research, science education and the conservation of wild populations.”

“The illicit exotic animal trade is the third largest source of illegal profits in the world today, just after illegal drugs and weapons! In the U.S. alone, there are an estimated 30,000 captive large carnivores living outside the zoo system. There are 4,000 Tigers living as “pets” in private homes in just the state of Texas – more Tigers than exist in the wild throughout the world. Countless other Great Cats, Bears, Wolves and other large carnivores live in abusive conditions in roadside stands, circuses, magic acts, traveling shows, and other substandard situations ().”

“The perception of environmental and social risks from genetically engineered organisms (GEOs) has made it one of the most controversial emerging technologies today. Unlike their conventional analogs, there is greater regulatory attention to the social and environmental dimensions of GEOs. Unquestionably, social mobilization, scientific uncertainty, and consumer resistance all considerably shape the trajectory of this technology. The types of commodities that are adopted by farmers and the form in which they reach consumers are profoundly shaped by politics – industry, activist, government agency, and consumer. Likewise, the politics of GEOs is shaped by the kinds of commodities brought in the research pipeline and the places where they are introduced. Activists more readily target some commodities than others, while some commodities have broader support for adoption.
